January 28, 2011 by Megg

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Went my alarm clock. I realized it was the last school day of the week, so I jumped out of bed, got ready for school, and left for a great day.

When I got to school, I headed straight into the armory to walk laps until it was eight twenty. Then we walked into the warm, sizzling school and headed for our classrooms. The first thing we did when we got into the classroom was take lunch count. Lunch was soft shell taco. I ordered hot lunch. After that, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and skipped off to class.

Reading was the first class of the day, and Mrs. Dux gave us an assignment of reading our story and filling out a main idea and details paper on the story, The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China. We worked on that for about five minutes, then it was time for Reasoning and Writing.

In Reasoning and Writing, we read stories about Nothing Ever Happens in Our Neighborhoods. That took up the whole class, so after that it was time for social studies. Social studies went by fast even though we only did two things which were, checking our Chinese New Year booklet and, studying our vocabulary for the test on Monday. Some of the words we studied were loess, terrace, levee, and double cropping. It was time for spelling already, so we went back to our classroom and waited for class to begin.

Spelling was easy because we had L to J. One of the words we had was archeology. Almost everyone got that right in my class, but a few people missed it. BRRINNNG went the bell which meant that it was time for lunch.

When my class got into the lunchroom, it was very loud, maybe because we were going outside for recess since we were trapped inside for awhile, but nobody really knew. After lunch was recess, and people flew out of the school like there was a fire because they were so anxious to be outside. I played horse on the basketball/tennis court with Natalie. While we were playing, screams came from the dodge-ball game. They were having their “championship” game which was like any other game that they played, but I guess it made a difference to them. Just as I made a shot, the bell rang, so I grabbed the ball and headed inside to read for 15 minutes.

I was reading, On the Banks of Plum Creek when the bell rang and it was time for math. In math all we did was check our math assignment on clickers and then Mrs. Simmerman came for Guidance Class.

In Guidance Class we read a story, and then Mrs. Simmerman gave us a worksheet to do. Then she left, and it was time for music.

In music we sang songs for our program. My favorite one was the Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. Mr. Robe told us that he was going to have a boy dress up in a yellow polka dotted bikini. We laughed and then Mrs. Seibolt came and got us for P.E.

For P.E we did stations. Some of the stations were jumping rope, pushups, and situps. We got to do all of them before we had to go, but we were all looking forward to science, which was our next class.

In science we had Dr. Dave. Dr. Dave had two experiments for us to do. One was where you take vinegar and put it in a two liter bottle and take a balloon with baking soda in it and stick it over the bottle and pour the baking soda in it. The balloon then fills up with air from the baking soda, vinegar mixing together. The other experiment that we did was where you take a bottle of soap and food coloring mixed together and yeast and something else. And you pour it all in the bottle with the soap and swirl it around a little bit and it will start to erupt. After we did that it was time to go to band and study hall.

In band Mr. Luebbe told us to play a few pages, but then we played a song called Regal March. It was hard at first, but after you got the hang of it, it was pretty easy. After band we went back to our classrooms and had study hall. I did a little bit of my reading and then I got a treat for fun Friday. BBBRRRIIIIIIINNNNNG! Went the bell, which meant it was time to go home.

As I walked into the hallway, people were crowded in every nook and cranny there was. But after the long day came to an end, everyone was ready for the three day weekend to begin.

“It’s too bright in here… ,” I mumbled underneath my breath. Half in half out of the world and the inside of my eyelids, I fell out of bed then head on stumbling into my swim-team bag and shoes. Didn’t my mom remind me to put those away last night? Oh well, it was time to get ready for school on a dreadful Tuesday morning.
As I shouted goodbye to my parents, I waited for the bus. But as I flung the door open, the cold wind caught me. I inhaled the chilly air as it seems to freeze my lungs. I stepped outside and waited for my morning ride to school
Squeak, squeak, squeak, went my shoes as we were walking in the armory. Footsteps became louder, and talking went to talking over each other as more people flooded into the building. “Move a side if you can’t walk faster,” said Mrs.Dux who was walking side by side with Mrs.Mac. “Ok it’s time to go, get your things!” the teachers told us. All of us suited up for the cold walk back to the school. Reminding myself that we had all of our classes today, I trudged to school.
I took my seat and started packing for reading, language arts, and spelling. All those books in my book bag make a heavy load, so I took out my reading book and carried what was left. “Okay, time to go to reading,” Mrs. Hudson declared.
In reading we checked our Martin Luther King Jr. packet. Then we talked about the word adverse in our vocabulary Not a whole lot happened unless you count getting called Megg and having your assignment handed over to someone who “has the same qualities” as her. I guess that was really the only exciting thing that happened. But before my mind could shut off from reading, it was language arts, but pretty similar to reading.
During language arts we talked about our stories ‘Nothing Ever Happens on …’ and we had to add personification, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, idiom, similes, metaphor, etc. Then we got assigned 10 sentences, 5 boring ones and 5 tremendous ones. Finally it was time for spelling.
Nothing that big happened in spelling. We just played a couple rounds of sparkle, I can tell you this much of information, I will never be in a spelling contest. Looking at the clock, I thought it was time to go to s-c-i-e-n-c-e, science.
Slam went my books in my desk as I put them back. “Okay today we are talking about mixtures!” Mrs.Hudson exclaimed, Looking at our worksheet, I knew this would be easy. As we read through the paragraphs, I started on out worksheet, and I ended up getting it done before lunch. I felt proud of myself now, until I realized that I was pretty hungry.
Jeff rib was on today’s menu I ordered. It was pretty good except I didn’t like the bread so much. But hey next was outdoor recesses at last! We could finally play something outdoors! I played four-square, but not for too long. I headed over to some friends to talk, then the bell rang. It was time for oral reading then P.E.
Listening to ‘Nowhere to Call Home’ makes time pass by fast, and we were off to P.E.
We played kick ball in P.E. We lost, probably cause I’m a bad luck charm in that game. At least next was music.

Music was okay. We learned the choreography for 3 songs, so it was pretty easy and flew by in a breeze.
Dreadful math…was not that bad either. We did planet orbits and answered questions about them, but we didn’t get assigned review 1-16. I got those done too 3 minutes before social studies, phew.
Social studies was a class I didn’t mind because it was pretty fun and easy. We had to do a letter for each thing we learned or needed to study. Like for example A-artifacts. I didn’t get that done in class. Study hall it is.
Study hall and it was finally the end of the day, well I still had one thing on my list, which was tutoring the 4th graders in Mrs. Barbers class. When I got social studies done, I headed down stairs with the other person that helps too. Brriiinggg said the 3:20 get ready bell time to head back up to our class and get our stuff to go home.

Rushing out the door made me feel free like I was under a deep spell. But now I’m done. And in a few minutes I’ll walk right back into that door that set off the first cool air in my lungs - right back to the beginning.

Ding went the bell as I walked into the building. I got to school at 8:20, so I didn’t get to walk in the Armory like everybody else. I waited for my friends to come into the classroom. When everyone was situated in their seats, we began to do lunch count. The thought of homemade pizza made me hungry! After lunch count, Mrs. McAllister said, “Flag”, and then everyone stood up and said the Pledge of Allegiance. After saying The Pledge everyone got their books in hand and walked to Reading.

In reading we watched a PowerPoint on the Terracotta Warriors. The emperor Qin, wanted terracotta soldiers to protect him in the afterlife. After that, we watched a PowerPoint to introduce us to our new vocab words. After we learned the words, we had to do vocab. pictures as an assignment. Wow, reading went by so fast! Next was language arts.

For language arts Mrs. Dux read our stories that we had written. She didn’t get to my story, but maybe tomorrow if she has time to read them. Next it was on to social studies.

In social studies, we had to do a Chinese calendar worksheet. Then, we got a study guide to study. The test is tomorrow, so everyone should study. I know I am! Next was science.

We don’t usually have science at this time, but we had a program later, so we had to have science now. In science we went over the worksheet we did yesterday. Then, we had to get one big and one little blank piece of paper. We had to make compounds. For calcium oxide you would put a C and then an O by each other on the big sheet of paper. Next, it was time for lunch.

When I got back into the classroom, I could smell the fresh pizza. My stomach ached with hunger, so I was really ready for lunch! When I got done with eating my pizza, our table was dismissed. When I got into the classroom for recess, I sat down with Mr. Roby so he could help me with social studies. Then, it was time for math.

In math, we went to the marker board and wrote down what we got for certain problems. Then, we got a worksheet on greatest common factors. After that, we went to a program.

At the program, this band called No Better Cause sang and taught us about music. No Better Cause had no instruments, they just used their voices. Then, we walked back to school and it was time for study hall.

In study hall, I worked on homework, like math, social studies, and reading. I didn’t have band, it was just the trumpets. When the bell rang, I knew that it was time to go, so I got my homework in my backpack then headed out the door. Today was a good day, but I’m ready to get home and wait for the next day to come.

When I woke up this morning I knew it was Friday but, I didn’t know I would be Roving Reporter. It started with the same thing, having a cinnamon role for breakfast. After I was done eating, I went to school.
It was a long walk for those who weren’t driven to school. When sixth graders get to school, they have to walk in the gym. Next we were off to classes. When we got to reading, we read about saving nature.

In social studies we learned about China and Confucianism. It was a little easier to learn about China because our teacher went to China. Then we went to spelling and practiced for our spelling test. The bell rang and we went to lunch and then to recess.

Our next class was math. In math we learned about prime factorization. Our last class of the day was science. We learned more on chemical compounds. Before the day was done we had fun Friday. Fun Friday is for people who had their work done on time. Actually, this is a normal Friday. I will be looking forward to another week of school and weekend.

This morning, I woke up and looked at my alarm clock. It read 9:00. I was upset that I had overslept. I rushed to get my clothes on. Then, I remembered that we had a two-hour late start due to snow. Phew, I was relived that I had not overslept. I went back to my normal Thursday morning routine. I took a shower and then got dressed. After that, I ate a delicious, steaming hot ham, sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich with orange juice off to the side for breakfast.

Then, I grabbed my coat and backpack and walked across the track for school. The temperature felt like it was ten degrees below zero. When I walked through the doors, I felt much warmer. I put my hands over my ears to warm them up.

Because of the late start, we didn’t have reading or language arts. So, our first class was science.

In science class, we learned about chemical compounds. Chemical compounds are two or more elements combined to make a new substance. For example Na is sodium and Cl is chlorine. With both substances combined, it creates sodium chloride, better known as table salt.

Instead of social studies next, we had lunch. While I was walking to the lunchroom with my classmates, I could smell the exquisite Italian toasted cheese with tomato soup. I gobbled down my food in no time at all.

I hurried to my classroom for recess. There, my friends and I played a far out game of Apples to Apples. It seemed like we had just started when it was time to clean up.

After that, everyone in my class listened to Mrs. Dux read, The Endless Steppe. Today in that story, one of Esther’s classmates went to a theater to ask if she could borrow a costume for school. They allowed Esther’s friend to borrow the costume. However, when Esther went to ask, she was told no.

Then we went to visit Mr. Roby in the music room where we worked on our program, Top 40. We learned the actions for three songs, Top 40, I love Rock ‘n Roll, and Jailhouse Rock. Before long, it was time to go.

Miss Seibolt picked us up from music and led us across the parking lot for P.E. There, we had a half hour boot camp where we jogged, skipped, did sit ups, and pushups. When we were finished, sweat was dripping from my head.

Next we had social studies where we read about China’s Past. When we were finished, we were assigned a workbook page.

Our next class was math. We checked our assignment from the previous day. Then, we were assigned a few problems about prime factorization from our textbook.

My class was off to spelling with Mrs. Mac. There, we had L to J. L to J is an ungraded quiz that we take every Thursday. We get words from every subject that we have learned or will learn. This weeks words weren’t as hard as usual because I tied my all time high of 8 out of 10 for the third time.

It was time for mass band. I hurried to Mrs. Dux’s room to get my trumpet and head to the band room yet again. Band went by fast like always as we played songs from our music book.

I only had 5 minutes for study hall, but I used my time wisely. I got as much work done as I could. Then the bell rang and it was time to go home.

Even though I didn’t have much to write about because there was a shorter day with the late start, I still enjoyed having this assignment. I hope you enjoyed my roving reporter for today. Thanks for reading my story.

The snow was flying around like a white tornado. I was running to the warmth of the armory. The sound of people talking was deafening. The bell rang through the freezing snowy air. I braced myself for the frigid walk back to the school.

Our teacher took lunch count and everyone ordered hot. Wednesday’s lunch was Pizza Hut pizza. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and went our separate ways to reading.

During reading time we talked about Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous I Have a Dream speech. We also shared our stories about what our dream was. But some of us answered the question did his dream come true? The time flew by like a rocket and the next subject we had was Reasoning and Writing.

Actually we all stayed in the same room and continued as if it wasn’t really Reasoning and Writing at all. But then we got an assignment we had to do two pages in a packet about Martin Luther King Jr. But on top of that we had to do our vocabulary words. We got away without any more homework and fled to science.

Once in science we talked about how different elements got their names. We also answered questions 1-3 on page 399. We went over the answers and I didn’t miss any at all. In my opinion that was a quick class. But time doesn’t lie and it was time for social studies.

In social studies we checked workbook pages 24 and 25. Currently we were studying Ancient China. Once we had finished that we worked on our vocabulary words for social studies. The bell made us jump in our seats. We could all smell the pizza.

The pizza was fabulous. We all were dismissed by tables and were sent to our rooms to play board games because it was snowing outside. Apples to Apples was the game most of us played. We split into 2 different games because there were so many people. When recess ended we listened to our teacher read the Endless Steppe. Since we had no music today we had technology.

We worked on Blabberize.com for thirty minutes then we had P.E. In P.E. we played prison dodge ball. It was a good game and it was fun. Next was math.

In math we checked work from yesterday. After that we were assigned to do the problems 1-33. We all worked silently until it was time for the last subject of the day spelling.

When spelling started we checked Lessons 47 and 48. But yet another assignment came. We had to do Lesson 49. I finished and started doing reading but the bell rang and we had only 45 more minutes of school. But before school could end we had study hall.

I immediately started to do the reading packet. I finished that up and started to do vocabulary but time goes too fast and I had a ton of homework. It was time to go home.

It had turned out to be a truly great day. Into that freezing cold air kids flew out of the doors like a flock of birds as I started to walk home.

The alarm clock was going off at 7:00am as usual. This was one of those days where the sleep last night was so comfortable; I woke up with a smile on my face. But not just the sleep was amazing. I was still very comfortable in my bed on the edge of falling asleep thinking of the day ahead. So I got up got dressed, and before I knew it, I was heading off to school.

When I got to school, I was heading to the armory to walk because the weather outside was only about 10 degrees. As I got outside the door next to office, Anthony was telling me to turn around, so I did. When I got into Mrs. Hudson’s room, I got out my planner, notebook, my folder, my reading book, my reasoning and writing book, and my spelling book. After that I sat down and read my book as everybody was talking. Soon enough it was time to go to reading.

In reading we talked about our A.R. points. Me and some other people met our goal, so we got a pizza hut book it and some candy. Then Mrs. Dux handed us a packet about Martin Luther King Junior, and when it was time for reasoning and writing, we watched a video with Martin Luther king Junior’s speech.

Then it was time for spelling. We checked over our spelling lessons. I checked Lessons 46 and 47while others checked lessons 41 and 42. I was ahead because I scored over an 18 on my pretest. Just before we were done checking, it was time to go. I lined up, and my class and I headed for science.

In science we learned about the different kind of rows the periodic table has. These rows (going up and down) are called periods and as you head down the periods (going left to right) the more ultraviolent they are.

It was soon time for lunch, and we had breaded pork patties. During recess following lunch, I just read my book although sometimes I will play chess with my friend, Joel, during recess. After recess, Mrs. Hudson read a book aloud named Nowhere to Call Home.

Then we headed to P.E. with Ms. Seibolt. We played with pool noodles during this class time. In music, afterward, we worked on our play by learning some actions for our first song.

During math we turned in our assignment and leaned about the distributive property. Then we got an assignment. I got it done and finished my spelling assignment.
Then I was heading off to social studies with Mrs. Dux. In social studies we talked about China. Mrs. Dux then played the tape with the lesson out of book. We learned about the geography of China.
After that it was band time. I play the Tuba in the Low brass section. After warming up, we played a section from symphony number 1. I was one of the few people to know how to play it.

After Band it was time to go. I bundled up, grabbed my wood art and headed to the front door. The adrenalin was not pumping as it usually does at this time because it was cold outside and I had to walk home, but I made it back home in one piece.
