Each day a student from our classroom is the "Roving Reporter." He or she composes an article and takes photos using a digital camera. Read what takes place during the school year and in the life of a 6th grader at Jefferson School.

I woke up with a little light coming into my half closed eyes. Suddenly the shout of my dad’s loud deep voice awakened me. I got out of my bed and was shivering like a Chihuahua with no fur. I crammed my face with cereal then bundled up to take my dog out. I headed into a cherry red van then bounded off to school. We walked in the armory for fifteen minutes then raced into the warm classrooms. We took lunch count which was General Tso Chicken. Everyone went to reading after that.
Checking vocabulary pictures was fun to see what other people wrote and drew. After that we did a spelling test on our vocabulary words. I got a one hundred! When we were done with that we read Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street. I was very surprised that we didn’t have reasoning and writing, so we went straight to science.
While checking our papers we had to figure out what element we were. I was magnesium (12). When we were checking our papers, Mrs. Hudson showed us how heat can make things move. She called us by rows and dismissed us to go to spelling.
L-J is what we did in spelling. Some of the words were integers, pillage, and negative space. Once we were done checking that, we played a spelling game called sparkle. It was down to Michelle and me. The word was deceived. She said I instead of E. I spelled the word d-e-c-e-i-v-e-d. I got it right, and I won! I got a chocolate kiss. Then we abruptly went to social studies.
Looking at pictures of China was so beautiful like the one of a lit up boat. We also watched videos. My favorite one was one where she went under a river and saw a light show in a subway. We smelled lunch, and everyone glanced at the clock. Bring went the bell to go to lunch.
For lunch we had General Tso Chicken, and we gobbled that down. Then went to recess, and I played shark. Then we met our guest teacher, Mr. Edson. After that, we headed off to music.
During music we played a name game. I didn’t do so great. Once that was over, we went to P.E. where we played a rousing game of basketball. I think I did pretty well.
Test! Yippee a test in math. It was easy at first, but then it got harder. In the middle of our test something peculiar happened. We didn’t have page four. Wow! After math was done, we went to the high school to watch a storyteller.
We spent most of our study hall at the high school. His message was “Don’t get mad get Rad.” When we got back we had a fifteen minute study hall. I got my work done.
We all enjoyed a day at school, but we’re still excited to get out of school. We packed our book bags and lined up by the doors. Once the bell rang we all bombarded out the doors to get home.

I started my day by walking in the armory for about 10-15 minutes. After that Mrs. McAllister’s 6th grade class took lunch count and said the pledge. Then we headed off to reading class.
In reading we did acrostic poems which are when you put the letters of your name and describe things about your self. We had 5 minutes to work on it. Next it was time to head to Reasoning and Writing.
When I got there, we had to take out lesson 42 and correct it. Afterwards we started a new lesson, and we did part A,B,C, and D. Then we had to leave for social studies, but I didn’t have to leave since I was already in the classroom.
Mrs. Dux, the teacher, gave us fake passports to go to China. (She Google Earthed it). She showed us all the places where she has been. We ran out of time, and then we left for spelling.
I slowly walked down the hall to go to spelling. We just went over lesson 38 and that was it. As we all sat there with our stomachs growling for lunch, the bell finally rang to go to lunch.
When we finally got to the lunch room, the smell of a Fiestada, which is Spanish for a small pizza or something like that, filled the air. After everybody completed their lunch, we went outside for lunch recess!
At recess I played dodge ball for 30 minutes which was the whole recess time, and then the bell rang as we all marched inside with our small cold and bitter little fingers. Now it was time for math.
During math we graded our work sheet buy using a marker board, and that was it. Once again we went into over time with math, and we skipped art. Then it was time for P.E.
In P.E. we played snake tag for warm up, and then we played a vigorous game of basketball! Next it was time for science.
In science we learned what a neutron and what a proton are. Then we had a work sheet over what we learned. Finally it was time for study hall.
In study hall I worked on my Roving Reporter. So that is our 6th grade day at Jefferson Intermediate school.

December 13, 2010 by Lilibeth
It all started out this morning when it was time to go to school. I was so exhausted I could barely get off my bed. My alarm was beeping and screaming at me, "GET UP, GET UP!" It was another day of school, another part of life just like I always say. I quickly got up, got changed and off I went to school. Like always my mom and dad drop me off at school. Then I went to the Armory to walk instead of in the track cause it was cold.
Then the bell rang and we all went back inside to our homeroom. I got my coat off and hung it up on a hook. After that I quickly packed up for reading, lang. arts, and spelling. Mrs. Hudson was doing lunch count. I got crispy chicken on a bun. After she was done doing lunch count she told us to stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance. We then went off for reading.
In reading today Mrs. Mac gave us back our worksheet from last weekend. We went over it and redid the one's we missed. She then gave us the Weekly Assessment that we didn't have time to do last weekend, so we got it finished. I didn't get homework in reading. Wow that went really fast, and it was time for lang. arts.
In lang. arts Mrs. Dux asked for our character sketches. Then she told us to get out our lang. arts book. We went over part A. lesson 42. We started part B. but it was time to go so we had to finish the whole lesson 42 and Ind. work. I had homework but not alot. Next it was off for spelling with Mrs. Mac.
In spelling we did a coloring worksheet. They were supposed to be for Mrs. Cerny who just had a knee surgery and one for Isaac who has bone cancer. Were supposed to cut them out and write something like Get well or Merry Christmas Well look at that. It was already time to go to science class. That was so fast.
Today in science we checked over last week’s homework pg.387 vocab. Then we opened up our books to page 389 on comparing Boron and Nitrogen. I was doing my homework, but it was already time for lunch.
At lunch we had crispy chicken on a bun. I had crispy chicken salad and apple sauce YUMMY!!!!. Then it was recess time, but we couldn't go outside cause it was too cold. Instead we had indoor recess.
I played battleship with Evelyn, and I got her many times. Luckily she only hit me 4 times. Then recess was over and Mrs. Hudson gave us back our leather rounds that we made in art. We put on something that looked like Vaseline. She punched holes in it and we went to hang it up on the Christmas tree by the office.
Then she read Peppermints in the Parlor just for a little bit. We then headed to library. Mrs. Johnson read us the book called The little Red Hen. Once she was done she handed us a paper compare and contrast with The little Red Hen and Cockle - Doodle - Doo.
We headed out to music. In music we had to get markers and marker boards. Mr. Roby told us to put our phone number or make up one. I made one up. He told us to go to the piano keys and practice for tomorrow.
Mrs. Hudson picked us up from music and we headed to math. We checked over last week’s homework and got marker boards with markers. We wrote our answers on the boards. Then we had pg. 120 numbers 7-15 even.
In social studies she gave us sour patch kids because she had difficult problems with the clickers, so we had to click them in all over again.
With less day and lot of homework the day was over. I don't go to band so I stay and do homework. I didn't have a lot, so I'd get it done. Good day my fellow citizens.

December 9, 2010 by Kadin
Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep said my blaring alarm clock. I couldn’t believe it was already time to get up, so I got up, jumped in some clothes, and ate warp crisp bacon along with delightful eggs. Then I got in the car and headed for school. When I got there, I walked on the track with my friends on a pleasant fall morning. When the bell finally told us to go inside, we sat and did lunch count, and then we stood for the pledge.
First in reading, we did a graphic organizer on Juan Verdades, the man who couldn’t tell a lie. After that, Mrs. Dux told us about how low the class scored on summarizing, and then she threw some words in there that nobody knew, as she was in front of the class making our dendrites grow. After she planted some dendrites in our heads, the bell rang, and it was time for language arts.
Second, during language arts we typed are final drafts on our character sketches. Mine was about this kid who was an amazing athlete and beat the Los Angeles Lakers with one hand. After he did beat the Lakers, it was time to stop typing and go to science.
Next, in science class we would usually have Dave where we have a lot of fun and do wacky experiments and stuff like that, but instead we had an exciting science test. It seemed like the time went by so fast that she passed them out and then bam, she picked them up again and said to go line up for social studies.
After that, we got into social studies and found out about another “exciting’’ test. Can you believe what these teachers put us through? When we heard everybody’s stomach growling with hunger, we knew to put our pencils down start for the cafeteria.
When our stomachs were finally stuffed with delicious mouth- watering chicken nuggets, we went outside for an adrenaline pumping recess. I caught a game winning catch in dodge ball with my fingertips. After it felt like I hit the jackpot in the lottery, the bell rang and everyone went inside for music.
When we went to music Mr. Roby, our music teacher, clapped rhythms and we had to write that rhythm on little marker boards he gave to us for the class. When he stopped clapping and looked at the clock, we knew it was time to go to P.E. As we all scrambled to get to the armory to do layups in basketball, I found out that I’m not a good basketball player. As my bad luck in shooting continued, we lined up to go to math and the humiliation finally stopped.
Next, in math we went over an easy worksheet on inverse operations. Then she gave us yet another easy worksheet on the same thing. And as soon as she gave us the worksheet, it was time to transition to spelling.
In spelling we did L to J and got a better percentage than all of the other classes, as usual. To top it all, I finally got another all-time high of seven. After I was done doing my little happy dance, it was already time for study hall.
After that in study hall, I worked on the easy worksheet that we got in math, and of course, I got done with it and looked at the clock and realized it was already time to leave and go home.
Finally, every one stampeded out the doors like a herd of buffalo wanting to get home and enjoy the beautiful fall day in the rainbow colored leaves.

December 8, 2010 by Evelyn
Today the day greeted us with a howl of whistling wind. When I got to school, we walked on the coldness and the blackness of the track . Everybody rushed in the building like a herd of cattle. When we got in the building, we all hung up our backpacks and did our normal routine of the Pledge of Allegiance and lunch count. As everyone left the classroom for reading, we gathered our stuff and rushed out the door like rush hour in New York, New York. Of course we didn’t want to be late to class.
In reading with Mrs. Dux, we learned about affixes with a power point. She also taught us about literary devices, like for example homonym. Two words are homonyms if they are pronounced or spelled the same way but have different meanings. Another example of a literary device is a homograph. A homograph means two or more words that are spelled the same way but are different in meaning. For example the word fair can mean a light color or you can go to a fair to see animals.
Off we transitioned into Reasoning and Writing. In Reasoning and Writing we had been given an assignment to write a character sketch about a person, animal or thing. My character sketch was about my best friend. My narrative described her characteristics, physical features, and what she is like. Mrs. Dux gave us the, not so challenging, assignment to make a web and do a sloppy copy of all our fantastic ideas. (I hope anyways.) We all ran to our next class like an angry mob as the bell screamed it’s loudness into our ears.
My next class happened to be spelling class with Mrs. McAllister. In spelling class we did lesson 36 in our spelling book. As I was going to close my book because I was finished, Mrs. McAllister said one more thing. There was a handwriting assignment. Groans were heard everywhere.
My next class was science with Mrs. Hudson who is my homeroom teacher. During science class we went over our assignment, and then Mrs. Hudson broke the news that we were going to take a science test. As I was getting ready to write an answer on the last page, the bell made its presence made known when it rang to tell us that lunch was finally here at last.
In lunch I had crispy mini corndogs, cold chocolate milk, delicious salad with crunchy croutons and ranch dressing. Just as I was dumping my tray, I heard the bell so I got my coat, gloves, scarf, and hat.
As I got outside, a whiff of spine shaking cold ran up my skin with the wind that was blowing. All my time at recess I was on the swings, and recess was over faster than I could blink. As everyone ran inside joyfully, we hurried to our class because it was so freezing cold. There ended my recess with a blink of an eye.
When everyone was inside and ready to go, Mrs. Hudson read from Peppermints in the Parlor which, of course, gets more and more exciting each day. Every Tuesday through Thursday we have P.E., so Miss Seibolt appeared like a ghost not heard through the door way. In P.E. we practiced shooting hoops until P.E. was over with a loud blow from Miss Seibolt’s whistle. As we left the armory, we headed back to our classroom because we didn’t have music. Instead we had writing.
In writing class Mrs. Hudson assigned an essay about why I am proud to be an American. She gave us time to work on it for half an hour. Once the half an hour was over, we eagerly got out our math books to begin with math.
Once math began, we started our math assignment. Our math assignment was to do 1-16 which was to predict which number was next in line, like to subtract, add, divide, or multiply. After we were done with that, everyone read or worked on other assignments until social studies made its approach.
Social studies was with Mrs. Dux. In social studies we played a review game to help us remember things for the test tomorrow. Somebody picked out a category and how many points they wanted. After that everyone put in the answer they thought was the correct one with a clicker. Social studies went by like a tornado whizzing around the room.
Some went to band, and others went to study hall. I happened to go to study hall. During study hall I went to the library to check out a new book for the weekend. When I got back to the classroom, the clock was ticking for minutes for the bell to ring its loud tune. As we all gathered our stuff to finally leave school, the bell rang once again telling everyone that school was out, but only for the day. It was an exciting day of school, but it has to end sometime. I hope to see you again in 18 or 19 days.

When I woke up, I was greeted by the unpleasant ray from my lamp in my eyes. So I got dressed, brushed my teeth, and hopped on the bus.
When I arrived at school, I went up to the track to walk. The bone-chilling air made my cheeks as red as a delicate rose.
Ring, Ring, the bell rang. We all rushed off the track and into the school. When we got into the classroom, we did the usual lunch count and flag salute. After that we sauntered over to reading.
In reading, we clicked in our answers on clickers and Mrs. Dux talked about a man playing an Asian instrument that she saw in China and how she wouldn’t have seen that if she didn’t take the path less traveled by.
Holy smokes! Time flies. It was already time for Reasoning and Writing. . We did a character sketch of a person or fictional character.
I glanced at the clock and it was time for spelling. We did a spelling test, and we played a little bit of Sparkle.
In math, we did a quick check. We wrote rules for number patterns.
Next it was time for science. We checked some questions and did 1 through 11 on a chapter review test.
Rumble, Rumble, our stomachs growled. The tantalizing and mouthwatering scent of the breaded beef stick was like a class to our stomachs.
After we gobbled down our food, we went to recess.
After recess, we read Peppermints in the Parlor for a little while. Then we headed to PE. We ran six laps, stretched, practiced our free throwing, and played some knock-out.
In social studies, we played a fun vocabulary review game.
It was time for band. Man, social studies went by fast. In band, we went over eighth notes. Then I went back to the classroom. I packed up and was ready to leave. When the final bell rang, it was like getting lost in a herd of bison, but I made it out alive.

December 6, 2010 by Morgan
I awakened to the sound of my alarm clock beeping repeatedly in my ears. I groaned with exhaust and lazily dragged one foot and then the other out of my bed. I then headed towards the bathroom to get ready for school. Once finished, I quickly locked up and was on my way to Jefferson.
The wind began to bite me as I approached the school building, though I couldn’t feel it, for my face was numbed from its previous bites. Once I got to the entrance, I saw that there was a crowd of children at the school doors. All were waiting anxiously to get out of this freezing weather. I joined in with the crowd; I too wanted to get out of this weather.
Almost immediately the crowd began to lessen. Waves of people spilled threw the doors of Jefferson. Sighs of relief began to fill the air once warmth was reunited with everybody’s bodies. As I looked around, I saw everyone’s faces glowing with redness from the wind biting them so hard.
I walked in to my classroom and unloaded the bolder I call my back pack, putting all of the heavy weighed text books back into my desk. After I finished unloading, I hung my back pack on a hook and sat at my desk, preparing for my first class of the day… reading.
Reading was the same as it always is on a Monday. We checked vocabulary, took some A.R. tests, and we read a short story. This one was about a girl named Maria who moved and was put into a different school. She was very shy at first, but in the end she made some new friends and ended up being very happy.
Language Arts was just as remote as reading. The only difference of my day so far was that Ms. Dux, my teacher, handed me a camera and a hard drive and told me I was roving reporter. No words could express the joy I was feeling once I was handed that hard drive. I was about to cry, but my mind said, “No! Don’t let them see you cry! Control your happiness! Be strong and hold back your tears!” I did what I was told.
Suddenly science came, and it was time to go to Ms. Hudson’s room. We checked over the graphs we had made last week with an experiment we did using different temperatures of water and red dye. We then shared our answers to questions we answered about our experiment. Afterwards it was time to leave. We were given a homework assignment to answer five questions on page 331 in our text books.
We played Egypt games on the computer for social studies. Although there were many different games, everybody was playing the one game where you went through the process of mummifying a pharaoh. I kind of grossed out when you removed the brains, even though it was digital. Everybody was sucked into the game until the lunch bell rang.
I got up to get my heavy purple jacket and started towards the cafeteria. The smell of chicken strips filled the air which I was happy to inhale. I got my tray and sat at a lunch table with a few of my friends. After we finished, I grabbed my coat and ran for the swings. I swung back and forth, high, and low. I swung so high that I was flying with the birds!
The bell eventually spoiled my fun and rang its lousy ring telling everybody to go inside. Similar to this morning, there was a crowd of 12 year olds waiting at the entrance of the school, dying to get out of this freezing weather.
After everybody was inside and warm, Ms. Dux began to read out of The Endless Steppe. The book was getting really exciting, but she had to stop because it was time to leave for library.
As we walked into the library, the teacher had us drop off our books and head into the computer lab. We then sat in our assigned seats and began working on our keyboarding practice. I tried to going really fast so I could get done early, but that didn’t work out cause I kept on getting my fingers in a bundle. Two minutes before our class had to leave; we were told that we could check out some books, if we need to.
When our class came back, Ms. Dux told us to get out last week’s homework so we could check over it. Later on in math, we began to learn about algebra. Some people understood it right away, others - it took them awhile. (I was one of the others.) Eventually, we got the hang of it.
Our last subject of the day was spelling. We checked over a lesson that we were supposed to finish for homework last week. Then we started on a new lesson that we had to finish for homework.
Nothing was left except for study hall. I couldn’t believe school was almost over. It seemed like I was saying good morning to everyone not even 30 minutes ago. I worked on nothing but the homework I had that was assigned for me, and even after spending a whole hour on it, I didn’t even put a dent in the amount of assignments I had.
Packing up the rest of my homework kind of ruined my whole day, not because of how much I had to do, but because of the fact that I had to carry all of it on the way home. When I zipped up my book bag, it looked like I had two huge rocks in there.
Even though today wasn’t very exciting, it was still a pretty good day. I just hope tomorrow will be a little more adventurous.

Today was one of those days when I just couldn’t get myself out of my warm bed. It was another school day, on a Monday. Oh, boy! So I grabbed a biscuit, and headed outside to wait for the faithful bus.
It was so cold outside as I walked on the track, that I buttoned down my hat and had to keep walking just to keep my blood circulating. Hannah did the lunch count today. Then we did the Pledge of Allegiance when Mrs. Dux got back. After that, the crazily hectic day began.
First, we had reading in our schedule. In reading we went over the test we had taken, last week. Then Mrs. Dux read our Haiku’s. A Haiku is a Japanese poem that has 5 syllables for the first line then 7 syllables for the middle line, for the last line there is 5 syllables. My Haiku is: Sunrise signals day, Bright colors fill the wide sky, The day has begun. She made us type them on the computer and draw a picture to go with it. Even though we got an assignment, it was actually a pretty good reading class. Hopefully language arts would be as interesting as reading.
In language arts we went over our lesson 40 test. Then dreadfully, I realized that it was my turn again to do Roving again, so I grabbed the camera and a graphic organizer. Then as quick as a blink, it was time for science.
In science class we turned in our science books to pg. 377, and that’s when I found out that I had grabbed my social studies text book instead of my science book. I had to borrow a text book from Mrs. Hudson, the science teacher. After all today was a Monday. She gave out an assignment that everybody got done with. Then it was time for social studies.
In social studies we watched a movie on Egyptian pharaohs. Did you know that King Tut wore sandals made of gold? I don’t think those would have been the most comfortable shoes to wear. Once the smells of lunch got so great, and my stomach couldn’t stand one more minute, it was time for lunch.
Today’s lunch was Jeff rib on a bun. It wasn’t too bad! Then off to recess we went. If I had thought that this morning was cold, then it was like the tropics compared to what it had been like this morning. Recess lasted forever until the bell saved us from freezing.
Mrs. Dux read to us for 10-15 minutes, and then it was time for music. Once in music, we did an activity learning about what syllable went with what note and how many beats per measure they got. Then, in library we did keyboarding practice #6.
Then we had math. In math Mrs. Dux introduced a new lesson with patterns. With that introduction came an assignment. Then with a bit of excitement and curiosity, we headed off to spelling.
In spelling she gave out a lesson to do as an assignment, which I got completed. Then off to band I headed along with the other flute players.
After band was study hall. There was just enough time for me to print my Haiku before the bell sent off a chain reaction of students all making a mad dash for the door.
As far as Mondays go, today wasn’t too bad.
November 30, 2010 by Antonio
Woke up this morning feeling like P Diddy. Just kidding. I felt like I need two more hours of sleep, but that didn’t matter I had too school.
When I got there, we did what we usually do every morning, lunch count and the flag salute. So after we got done transitioning into reading, the class went over our unit test.
Holy funky monkey! It was already time for language arts. Mrs. Dux taught us about character sketches. What most people didn’t know was that she was going to make us start off with a G.O.
Once we got done walking from Mrs. Dux’s classroom to Mrs. Hudson’s, it was time for science. In science we went over a pretty interesting paper called graphing changes.
So after we got back from Mrs. Hudson’s, we played a game called Vocabulary Cards. It was a review on our social studies vocabulary words.
After I looked at the clock, it was time to go to lunch.
Once we got back, Mrs. Dux read this book called The Endless Step. But she only got to read two pages, because we had to go to P.E. and music.
When we got back, we had math all we really did was go over 3-4 practice.
And that’s pretty much it…….I’m Antonio, and I just took you through a day in sixth grade.

November 23, 2010 by Hannah
It’s hard to imagine how busy we are in 6th grade. I’ll tell you about a normal day starting at the beginning, and by the end, I’ll bet you’ll be as tired as I was.
After being dropped off at school at 8:10 and walking around the track in what felt like 100 F weather, I rushed inside to thaw my toes. Since Mrs. Dux was busy, she picked me to do the lunch count. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and hurried to our reading class.
In reading, we took the Reading Classics test, and then we learned what a haiku is. A haiku is a Japanese poem with three lines. The first line usually has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables, and the third line has five again. Haikus do not have to rhyme. Here is an example:
Reading can be fun,
When you have your haikus done.
Off to language arts.
During language arts, we read each others’ roving reporter essays, except mine of course. (‘Y’ am I always last?)
Changing from language arts to science was like a solid changing to a liquid. The students were molecules getting up and moving to the science classroom. We learned that one way matter changes state is through heat. When I looked up at the clock, it was time for social studies.
As I walked into social studies class, I was thrilled to see we were watching a video on ancient Egypt. It transported us back to a time when pharaohs ruled and mummies walked the earth. No, that was some horror movie I watched. Our video didn’t have walking mummies, but it did have blood and guts. It showed us how Egyptians mummified bodies.
Next was lunch, and I could hear my stomach growling. I answered it with turkey gravy and mashed potatoes. There were a variety of flavors from sweet pumpkin pudding and corn, to tart cranberry Jell-o. After lunch, we usually go outside to recess, but since it was so cold, we stayed inside and played Twister.
When the recess bell rang, we went to our seats, ready for our teacher, Mrs. Dux, to read to us. We’ve been listening to a book about a Jewish girl in World War II. Just when Mrs. Dux got to the good part of the story, we had to stop, line up, and go to music.
After music, we went to PE. In PE, we started “Hoops for Heart”, a program to raise money for the American Heart Association. We found out that we would be starting a section on basketball.
When we came back from PE, we sat down for math. Math was the same as always – numbers, numbers, and more numbers. The only good thing was that Mrs. Dux let us redo the questions we had gotten wrong on our tests.
Spelling was the next subject, and it meant the school day was almost over. We did some fun Thanksgiving puzzles, and we were assigned a handwriting worksheet.
Finally, study hall gave us a chance to do some homework before marching off to band. We’re only just beginning to learn how to play our instruments, so there was no actual marching yet. But, we sure made a lot of noise with the whole band together.
Whew! I told you it was going to be a long day. After sitting through nine subjects, changing classrooms four times, and doing all the assignments, I could barely stay a…ZZZZZZZ.
November 22, 2010 by Megg
As I woke up to the sound of my alarm, I knew that it was going to be a very dreadful Monday morning. When I got to school, everyone was so tired. It looked like some of them were going to fall asleep right then on the sidewalk. People walked a few laps on the track, and then we headed inside for the nice warm, out of the oven, feeling of heat in our classrooms.
Once everyone unpacked their bags, we took lunch count. After that we said the Pledge of Allegiance. Then off to reading we went.
In reading, Mrs. Dux talked to us about a few things and then gave us our assignments which were a G.O. and workbook pages 73. After that, we went over some questions in our book from last week. I could hardly believe that it was already time for Reasoning and Writing.
In Reasoning and Writing we finished a test which wasn't too hard. Then when we got done, we could either work on other homework, read an A.R book, or study vocabulary on the Mac computers. (I chose to work on homework.) BRRRIIIINGGG rang the bell, and it was time for social studies.
When social studies began, we talked about some mummies we were going to be making on Wednesday. Mrs. Dux even showed us one that she had. It felt weird and stunk horribly. After that we drew on some papyrus that she had. We were so into drawing that we didn't even notice that it was time for spelling, so we left her room in a hurry.
In spelling, we wrote down a few sentences in our workbook. Then Mrs. McAllister let us do whatever we had to do for homework because some of the kids didn't get their homework done so they had to do it.
With stomachs growling like bears, we headed off to lunch. For lunch we had chicken nuggets, bread, peaches, and applesauce. That was delicious! During recess, some people played dodge ball, and others played basketball. But as for me, I built a sand castle with some sand on the ground. Frozen as we were, we finally headed inside for the warmth of the heaters.
After we got inside, Mrs. Mac read to us from Peppermints in the Parlor. Emily was trying to figure out what all had happened, like why Tillie's breath had the faint scent of a peppermint. She suddenly stopped and said “ Take out your math please.”
In math class, we put some answers into clickers from a worksheet we had to do. We also talked about pages 108 and 109 in our textbook. After that, we had our assignment, which was page 110 in our math books. Finally, math class was over so we went to music.
In music, we played some songs on the keyboards and had some free time to play around on them. It was then time for library.
In library, Mrs. Johnson read us a story that was about Thanksgiving. That class went by in a flash. It was science time.
When we got to science, we read and talked about pages 374 and 375. They were about boiling things. For our assignment we had to do question #1. It was finally time for study hall.
In study hall, I worked on some homework that I had. Then at 2:55, Natalie and I went to flute lessons with Mr. Luebbe. The bell rang so it was time to go home.
After a hard-working Monday finally came to an end, we were all ready to go home for the day. As we headed outside, kids were buzzing like bees everywhere. Today was a really good day.

“You’re going to miss this.” Sang my alarm clock. As I hopped out of bed, I remembered it was Friday! But not even that could cheer me up because all I wanted to do was go back to bed and sleep, though it’s good to have an education. So I got out of my pj’s. and put on a long sleeved shirt, a pink t-shirt, some skinny jeans, a pair of socks, and my black boots to complete my casual, as far as school goes, outfit. Next thing I knew I was chugging a glass of milk and finishing up my breakfast. Then I put on my book bag, headed for the door, said my goodbyes, and went to the end of the driveway to wait for the bus. Of course it was freezing, so I kept myself warm by walking in place because everyone needs a little exercise. Finally the bus was here, so I sat in my seat and headed off to school.
At school we walked on the track with usually the same people we walk with every day. Nothing changed much in the day. Except for Mrs. Dux being gone, everything seemed normal. Right as we were turning the corner, the bell rang, but I looked over to see Anthony racing to the finish line as if he was going to die if he didn’t get there in time. Scooping up my book bag, I walked to the school preparing myself for the best and the worst that can happen.
The first few minutes flew by! I couldn’t believe I was already in reading! In reading we did a weekly test with the vocabulary words also. I don’t think I did so well. After the test, we could have the choice of getting a laptop, so I went to get one. Of course it didn’t turn on. Second laptop…it didn’t turn on. So I asked Hannah what I could do, and she said to get one more. Third time’s a charm! Of course she was right; it finally worked! But after that it was time to transfer into language arts.
In language arts we did lesson 40 which was a test. It wasn’t too bad, but there were some things I was still a little unsure about. Oh my, already time for spelling?
Walking in to Mrs. Mac’s room smelled like cinnamon - No, cinnamon buns. I don’t know what it smelled like, but it made me hungry! In spelling we had to write the 2 most common spelling rules on a card. Then she assigned lesson 31. While I was getting out my spelling workbook, I quickly checked the clock, and it was time to head to homeroom for science.
Once I took my seat, she said to get out our colors. We had to color a meter about gas, liquid, and solids and answer 8 questions. Grumble, grumble went my tummy. Finally it was time for lunch!
We had a Jeff roll which is like a Runza. Teachers excused us and we headed out for recess. I played shark tag with my friends. Bring went the bell. It was time to go inside for Mrs. Hudson to read to us.
I listened to Mrs. Hudson read Peppermints In The Parlor. Then it was time for library.
In library we typed. See if you can type these 2 times under 10 seconds: had a fall; as a fall add; a sad dad fall; a dad dad;! Time always flies during library, and next was math.
In math we had to color pilgrims, and then Mrs. Hudson assigned 18-30 in our math book. I got it done in class, so it wasn’t too bad. Putting away my math, I checked the clock and saw it was almost time for social studies.
Packing up my books, I headed out the door with the rest of my class like a row of ducks. I took my seat, and Mrs. Welsch talked about papyrus, and how we were going to draw and color on it. I did my name which is really cool! It’s like drawing on bamboo, only better, I think? I also drew the lions of the horizon. “Okay, time to go,” Mrs. Welsch said. Heading towards the door, I couldn’t believe how fast time flew. Friday was coming to an end.
In study hall, we had fun Friday. We got a treat and finished up Pinocchio. The clock said 3:00. We still had a little time left which I used to finish up my science. Once I heard Mrs. Hudson say to start packing up, I gathered my homework, got my coat, and lined up. As we went through the double doors, kids ran up the ramp to get to their house. I went up to my bus, took my seat and prepared myself for the next destination…home.

I got out of the truck and heard the laughs of my friends playing around and telling stories of the past day. As I slowly walked to the track, I looked for my friends. When they had seen me, they rushed up to me to talk. They wondered where I had been for so long (I was sick for two days). As the bitter chill of the morning November day rushed up and down my legs, I walked and talked and was glad to be with friends! Ding! Well, that meant it was time to go inside.
When I got inside, I made sure I had all my homework from the past two days (I did). Then it was time to do lunch count; today’s lunch was country fried steak. When she called out my name to choose what I wanted for lunch, I hesitated to answer because I didn’t know what it was, so I told her to come back to me while I looked. I ended up choosing turkey sandwich pack because I don’t like steak. Next, Mrs. McAllister said “flag” which means to do the flag salute. Every one jumped up from their chairs and put their right hand over their heart. Then it began,
“I pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”.
Then, it was time for reading.
In reading, Mrs. Dux gave us partners to read “The Great Serum Race”. The story is about people in Nome, AK getting diphtheria so the doctor sent a plea for medication. Medication then was on its way, but the train couldn’t go all the way to Nome, so dog sled teams would have a relay to carry the serum to Nome. The serum gets there safely and is given to the people in need, and the people of Nome are saved thanks to the dog sled teams. After we read the story, we had to fill out an event worksheet on the story. Then, we had to do the comprehension check. Whoa, Time flies when you’re in reading. It was time for language arts!
In language arts we checked lesson 39. I still have to do it because I was gone. Then, it was time for social studies! What did I tell you? Time does fly!
In social studies we watched a video on Ancient Egypt! The video talked about mummies and pyramids. It showed us pictures of the mummies. It told us about the pyramid and the heavy stone blocks the Egyptians had used. Afterwards, it was time to go to spelling.
Barter, anaerobic those are just some of the words we used in spelling for L to J. After we wrote down the words for the definitions, we checked them. (I got 5 right.) Spelling went by faster than a herd of horses being chased by a mountain lion. Time for lunch!
At lunch I sat and talked to some of my friends until the teacher said it was time for recess! During recess I played on the monkey bars and the swings. Wow! We need a longer recess! That went by faster than light! Now, it was time for Mrs. McAllister to read to us.
When we got inside, instead of having her read, we played sparkle! I won one game! I like playing sparkle, but we had to have math.
First, we checked our paper. Then, we had a multiplication test. (I’m not very good at that.) After that, we had a math test! It was over the things we have studied the past few weeks. Next, it was time for music!
Music went by like a flash of lightning. (It usually does when you use the keyboards!) We practiced playing a song when all of a sudden, it was time for P.E.!
P.E. was amusing. We played Shark. When you play Shark, you sit on the floor with your legs under the parachute, and then the shark comes and tries to bring you under the parachute. If the shark does, then you will become a shark to! A lifeguard can come and save you. It was finally time to go to science!
We had Dr. Dave for science. He told us about earthquakes and how tectonic plates shift, and that is how we have earth quakes! The project we did was delicious. We took gram crackers and peanut butter and made houses to withstand an earthquake. The fun part was eating the house! Science went by like the speed of sound, and then it was time for study hall or band (if you are in band).
I’m in band, so as soon as I got into the classroom, I grabbed my flute and book then headed off to band. We had full band today, so it got a little noisy! We practiced and practiced until band was over, and then it was time to go home!
Everyone rushed into the classroom to grab their backpacks and homework to go home. The whole 6th grade rushed out like a lion chasing prey! Everyone was glad to be out, but pondered what wonder the next day would bring!

When I woke up this morning, I thought it would be a normal day, although it proved to be a truly weird day. When I got to school, we did video exercises on account of rain. At the point that we needed exercise balls, we did it without them because we had none, although a classmate brought his own. Little did I know, this would set a chain reaction of strange happenings.
We got to the classroom and did the lunch count and pledge. Then at reading we came in and got hot cocoa! We had no idea why, but we knew to go with the flow. While drinking it, we talked about reading material we had to know.
At nine thirty, we went to reasoning and writing class. That class wasn’t too weird .We did our work from the book. After a while we went to social studies. Alot of days we have assignments or at least talk, but today we just watched a video about Egypt.
At ten thirty, we had a spelling test. Then afterwards we played a game named Sparkle. When the bell rang, we knew what time it was now. It was time for lunch.
Today’s lunch was cheesy enchilada. When everyone was done eating, we went out for recess. At the time we came in, our teacher read from “Peppermints in The Parlor”.
When it came to math, we check our assignment from the day before. Then we had the usual assignment .When math came to an end, we worked on art. Then we went to science.
For science we did an assignment where we took a piece of paper and changed its mass by cutting it.
At the end of science, current band members had band practice. Then we went home knowing we have school again tomorrow.

First, I woke up to my blaring alarm clock and headed for the shower. Then, I had a colossal, warm, fresh out of the oven cinnamon roll that felt like an explosion of flavor inside of my mouth.
Next, it was time to walk on the track in the crisp, cool, fall morning air before school starts. The bell rang and the freezing cold bodies walked into the school for the lunch count and flag salute. Today, we had a change of schedule. Instead of reading right away at 8:30, we had to go to the cafeteria to get our fingers scanned for the new biometric finger scanning system. While we waited for the other sixth grade classrooms to get done with that, Mrs. Dux read a story, The Endless Steppe, for her class only. Finally, the other classes were finished in the lunch room. It was time for reading.
Today in reading, we started 30 minutes late, then, we talked about word origins for our vocabulary that belong with our story this week. We didn’t quite get finished, so, guess what we get to do tomorrow? We’re going to finish our vocabulary practice.
It was time for our Reasoning and Writing class. We had to write two paragraphs that go with our lesson about the biggest living thing on Earth, which is a sequoia tree that is named, General Sherman. The tree is 272 feet tall and 80 feet around with bark that is 24 inches thick.
Next on my schedule is science class. First, we checked our worksheet from the previous day. Then, we learned about solids, liquids, gasses, and plasmas. Most of my class already knew about solids, liquids, and gasses, but almost nobody knew about plasmas, including myself. A plasma, such as gelatin is not a solid, or a liquid.
Then I was heading back to my homeroom (Mrs. Dux’s classroom) for social studies. For starters, we checked a page from our workbook. Then we visited Egypt through Google Earth. We saw pyramids and the sphinx, which has the body of a lion and the head of a human that was made by the Ancient Egyptians.
Finally, it was 11:00 and time for my number one subject, lunch. I ordered a delectable grilled chicken sandwich on pita bread. Off to the side, I had chocolate milk, bread with butter, and some delicious noodles.
After we ate for 15 minutes, it was time for recess. I played a sensational game of three on three basketball. It seemed like we just got out there when the bell rang and everyone raced to the lines on the blacktop to go inside.
Before we could go to music and P.E., Mrs. Dux read some more of, The Endless Steppe. Everyone sat in complete silence, listening for 10 minutes.
Then, everyone walked on the newly carpeted hallway to see Mr. Roby for music class. There, we played a game with mostly flats, but we had a couple of sharps. It was a two team game where two people went head to head. One person from each team tried to guess what the key signature was. The first person to get the question right got to shoot a ball into a trashcan for a certain amount of points (my team won!).
Next, Mrs. Hilton picked us up from music class and it was time for my favorite subject, P.E. Everyone ran five laps around the volleyball court and then stretched. It was time for the best part; everybody played an eye-popping game of kickball. Unfortunately, my team lost, but it was still a lot of fun. Then, we walked back across the parking lot to the school to get ready for math.
In math, we took several quizzes on Moodle, a website to do work online. Then, right in the middle of my second quiz, the fire alarm sounded with its irritating voice that would wake the dead (it almost made Mrs. Dux fall out of her chair). Everyone rushed outside to the blacktop with the other classes. Then Mr. Hippen said it was okay to go back inside. Thank goodness it was just a drill. Then I finished as fast, but as accurate as possible before it was time for spelling.
In spelling, we played my favorite game, sparkle. The first two times, Kadin and I were the last two standing. It must be pure luck because that was the first two times that I won in the whole year.
It was time for band where everyone brought their instruments because it was Tuesday. After band, I went back to my homeroom for study hall where I took one more math test.
Finally, school was over and I walked home with Blake and Brent. As you can see, today was an action packed, fun filled day with all of my friends. I’ll be back in 19 school days for roving reporter.

The wind was not whipping our faces for once, but it was still freezing; the temperature was only 33 degrees. Finally, the bell rang. It sang a song that cut though the air like a hot knife through butter.
We came in and the heat of the school started defrosting us immediately. Right after we emptied our homework from our book bags, we said the Pledge that has kept our nation together for years. The scrumptious food we were going to get to devour at lunch time today happened to be hamburgers and French fries.
The school day started with reading. We wrote as much as we knew about dog sledding on an index card. Then we watched videos about dog sledding and about the Great Serum Race. Dogs saved many lives in Nome, Alaska when they delivered the serum. Wow! Dogs really are man’s best friend. Next, we had a bathroom break and Reasoning and Writing.
We talked about an assignment we had that was about a kid that was messy. We had drawn pictures and wrote a descriptive paragraph. Then, we did Part A on Lesson 39.The next class was science.
We talked about matter that could have a specific color, taste, odor, or that has a boiling and freezing point, conduct electricity or can be mixed together. No homework yet. I had hoped that I could get through the morning with no homework.
Social studies was interesting as we talked about the ancient Nubians and Egyptians. But the no homework dream just died. Workbook page 21 was assigned. So I went to the tasty smelling cafeteria with the thought of my homework.
The hamburger was delicious and I ate it all. My full belly helped me play basketball better. But the bell rang ending the recess. The bell saved us from the cold in the morning, but it made recess come to a halt. The bell rings at the best and the worst times.
Next, we listen to The Endless Steppe. Then, we went to music. We played a game involving note names. My team lost. After that we went to the library and typed 20 lines. After we got done with that we checked out our books. Our next class was Math.
We watched several movies on graphs, mode, mean and median. Then we had to do 1-14 on pages 89 and 90. The last class of the day was spelling.
In spelling we handed in Lesson 28 and our handwriting worksheet. Then we wrote sentences and did Lesson 29. Study Hall finally came.
During study hall I worked on social studies but didn’t get done. So I got ready to take it home.
Students of all ages rushed out of the school doors. People rushed out like a flooding waterfall. Laughter was all around me as I prepared to walk home.
